To Tell a Story. Your Story. Our Story.
Our name came from our founder’s freelance clients saying that they had to return to the “word mines” to keep toiling through the writing process. It became clear that all the non-writers working on these projects were working toward one common goal: to take the raw words of our authors and refine them into their best version. Welcome to The Word Refinery. Our editing and design philosophy is simple:
1. Diversity and Representation Matter.
Too many populations are kept silenced by institutions unwilling to adapt and unwilling to foster voices and viewpoints new to them. We are here for those people. Not only will we find people of those populations to work with, we will find those people and ask them to lead. We will use sensitivity readers. We will have leaders who do not look like us.
2. Amplify and Clarify the Author’s Voice.
Our job is to make the message of the writer as clear and as powerful as it can be for the audience. It is not to replace the author’s voice with our own.
3. Every Word Needs a Job.
If a word isn’t adding to the work then cut it. Every word needs to pull their weight.
